PORTIMAO, Portugal (AP) — Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira won pole position at the Portugal Grand Prix on Saturday as the season that was disrupted by the coronavirus crisis finally reaches its finish.

Oliveira clocked the fastest lap at the Algarve International Circuit on his KTM bike. Franco Morbidelli had the second-best time, followed by Jack Miller.

World champion Joan Mir will start Sunday’s final race of the season from 20th on the grid one week after clinching his first title in the top category.

It was the first career MotoGP pole for the 25-year-old Oliveira. It was also a first-ever pole for a Portuguese MotoGP rider.

The Portugal GP was added to the calendar this season after all races outside Europe were canceled due to the pandemic.
