ASTRID KIRCHHERR DIES

NEW YORK (AP) - German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, who took some of the earliest photos of The Beatles, has died at the age of 81. Her friend says Kirchherr died Tuesday in Hamburg. German publication Die Ziet reports Kirchherr died of a short serious illness. Kirchherr was part of the art scene in Hamburg in 1960 when she saw The Beatles in a club. Her photos of the band in black leather and cowboy boots were among the most striking images of them. The Beatles later adopted the collarless jackets she wore. Kirchherr became engaged to Beatles bassist Stu Sutcliffe, who died in 1962 at the age of 21. Kirchherr was married twice but told NPR in 2010 Sutcliffe was the love of her life.

KEITH URBAN PLAYS A DRIVE-IN

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Keith Urban played a secret concert Thursday night at a drive-in outside Nashville for about 200 medical workers from Vanderbilt Health. He played on a flatbed truck in front of about 125 cars with the help of two band members, one of whom played recorded tracks in absence of a full band. Urban joked it was “like glorified karaoke.” Urban asked the health care workers to send him selfies, which he put on the movie screen behind him. Urban says during the show, he’d see random lights and hear a horn and cheering, then he realized it was because people were seeing themselves on the screen.

COLLIN RAYE WILL PLAY CONCERT THAT DEFIES UTAH’S PROTECTIVE MEASURES

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Collin Raye will play a free concert May 30 in Kaysville, Utah, in defiance of current state directives aimed at slowing the coronavirus spread. Republican mayor Katie Witt tells the Salt Lake Tribune she feels the need to support people’s First Amendment rights. Witt is running for Congress, and her opponents question whether the concert is a political move. Raye says in a statement the concert will use recommended safety precautions, calling for fans to stand seven feet apart and encouraging the wearing of masks. Republican Gov. Gary Herbert’s office says the concert will likely violate restrictions on gatherings of more than 50 people, but local health officials will be responsible for enforcement.

LUKAS NELSON HAS WILLIE NELSON’S AUTOGRAPH BY ACCIDENT

AUSTIN, Tex. (AP) - How often does a person ask his or her own father for an autograph? Lukas Nelson says he’s proud that his father, Willie Nelson, signed his guitar, although Lukas did not request it. Lukas says he left his guitar on Willie’s bus, and Willie found it and figured it was something he was supposed to sign for charity. Lukas says it would be weird to ask his dad to sign his guitar, but he’s proud to have that autograph. Lukas says he’s been following the stay-at-home orders at his parents’ house. He says they play dominoes, and he and Willie will play guitar and sing to keep things fresh.

NAV IS NUMBER ONE WITH “GOOD INTENTIONS”

LOS ANGELES (AP) - NAV picks up his second number-one album, as “Good Intentions” tops the Billboard 200 album chart. It moved 135,000 units in its first week. His “Bad Habits” album was number one last year. Kehlani (kay-LAH'-nee) is second with “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.” “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” by Drake is third. “My Turn” by Lil Baby is in fourth place, and Lil Durk is in fifth with “Just Cause Y’all Waited.” Last week’s number one, Kenny Chesney’s “Here and Now,” drops to 38th place. Many of Chesney’s sales last week were driven by a concert ticket/album sale bundle with his upcoming tour, which he has now delayed until 2021.
