ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — The COVID-19 pandemic will be preventing firefighters and others in the St. Johnsbury area from delivering boxes of toys and food to people in parts of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

St. Johnsbury Fire Capt. Mike Pelow tells the Caledonian Record the pandemic means the normal gathering of volunteers in the firehouse to load trucks can’t happen.

Rather than having face-to-face doorstep greetings between recipients and people delivering the gift boxes, most of the local people in need of toys or food items will have to pick them up.

Details on how people can pick up the boxes vary by community.

People must register to receive the packages. Registrations will be accepted through Dec. 18 by the St. Johnsbury Fire Department.
