HONOLULU (AP) — Macy's Inc. has reopened 11 department store locations in Hawaii with new safety guidelines after temporary closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The New York-based company made the announcement Friday saying stores statewide will reopen for in-store shopping, curbside delivery and in-store pickup services ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

The retailer closed outlets nationwide in March to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and is the first major department store of its scale in Hawaii to reopen for business, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

“We are ready to welcome our customers back to Macy’s stores in Hawaii,” chief stores officer Marc Mastronardi said in a statement. “We’re introducing new precautions to keep your family and ours safe and are now offering curbside pick-up to make getting what you want quick and easy."

The company has also announced it will implement social distancing, install plexiglass at registers and equip employees with facial coverings to wear while working.

“They’re signaling to the people of Hawaii that we’re ready to start business again and that we need to get back to work. When you see the big anchors come back, that’s an indication that everybody wants to get back to work and they’re looking at the future and not the past," retail analyst Stephany Sofos said, citing the significance of the announcement.

On Oahu, Macy’s stores are now open at Ala Moana Center, Kahala Mall, Windward Mall, Pearlridge Center, Ka Makana Alii in Kapolei and Waikiki. On Hawaii Island, stores are open at Makalapua in Kailua-Kona and at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.

Stores are also open at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa and Queen Kaahumanu Center on Maui, and Kukui Grove on Kauai.

“Our teams have come together and supported each other and our communities throughout this challenging time, and we look forward to safely serving our customers whenever they are ready to shop.”

Macy's Inc. has reopened about 190 locations nationwide. The Hawaii locations are among an additional 80 stores that opened for the holiday weekend.
