PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine's emergency order about the coronavirus pandemic is entering its final days.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills declared the “state of civil emergency” in the early days of the pandemic. She has said the order will end on Wednesday.

The order has allowed Mills to use state resources to try to control the spread of the virus in Maine. Republicans and Democrats have sparred for months about whether the emergency order has gone on for too long.

Republicans have also charged that the order gave Mills too much authority and future orders should be more limited. Mills and other Democrats have said the order played a key role in reducing the state's burden from coronavirus.

Mills said earlier in June that ending the emergency order is a key milestone and it reflects that “Maine people have persevered, and, although challenges remain, we will get through them together just as we did this past year.”

Maine has suffered a lower toll of infections and deaths from coronavirus than many other rural states with similar population sizes. The state's economy is also largely reopened and most mask orders have been rescinded.

THE NUMBERS

The state's emergency order is ending as the number of daily new cases of coronavirus has fallen below two dozen.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Maine did not increase over the past two weeks, going from 51 new cases per day on June 12 to 21.57 new cases per day on June 26. The seven-day rolling average of daily deaths in Maine also decreased over the past two weeks, going from 0.86 deaths per day on June 12 to 0.57 deaths per day on June 26.

The AP is using data collected by Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering to measure outbreak caseloads and deaths across the United States.

About 58% of the state's population has had its final dose of coronavirus vaccine. More than 68% of residents age 20 and older have been fully vaccinated.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Monday that 858 people have died of coronavirus in the state since the start of the pandemic. There have also been more than 68,000 reported cases of the virus since the pandemic began.
