NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Seniors at Smith College are getting some words of wisdom this weekend from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The California Democrat is scheduled to address about 635 undergraduates and 51 graduate students at the prestigious women's college in Northampton during a virtual commencement ceremony Sunday.
The ceremony format prompted by the coronavirus pandemic includes the conferral of degrees and the reading of the names of every graduating senior, according to a statement from President Kathleen McCartney.
An in-person event celebrating the class of 2020 will be held on campus at a date to be determined sometime during the next academic year, the school said.
In addition to the commencement address by Pelosi, the program is expected to feature remarks by McCartney, senior class President Toula Sierros and Student Government Association President Rosalie Toupin.
Smith students have been studying remotely since March 30 because of the pandemic.
