Talk of joint Olympics hockey team worries South Koreans

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A last-minute proposal to form a joint North Korean-South Korean women's hockey team for next month's Olympics has sparked concern that it could be a bad move for the South Korean players.

A South Korean official tried to respond to the fears Wednesday.

"It is the government's basic stance that we will make sure there is no negative impact on our athletes," said Baik Tae-hyun, a spokesman for the Unification Ministry. He didn't elaborate.

Rival Koreas agree to form first unified Olympic team

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The rival Koreas agreed Wednesday to form their first unified Olympic team and have their athletes parade together for the first time in 11 years during the opening ceremony of next month's Winter Olympics in South Korea, officials said.

Vonn leads Cortina downhill training by large margin

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Lindsey Vonn led by a large margin in the opening training session for a World Cup downhill on the Olympia delle Tofane course Wednesday.

Vonn held a 0.95-second advantage over Sofia Goggia of Italy and was 2.02 ahead of American teammate Jacqueline Wiles.

In a strong showing for the American and Italian teams, Alice McKennis of the United States was fourth and Federica Brignone of Italy was fifth.
