IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK BANS GROUP WITH TIES TO “BOOGALOO” MOVEMENT
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Facebook says it has banned an extremist anti-government government that has ties to the “boogaloo” movement: an effort to engage in a second Civil War or a collapse of civilization. The social media site didn't try to name the group it ousted — and that's part of the problem in ridding the internet of those involved in these kinds of online actions. Those involved in such networks linked to domestic terror plots try to camouflage their existence and keep their distance from each other. They also have been known to change their symbols and catch phrases — and even mask their intentions with sarcasm.
IN THE NEWS: ELECTRIC SCOOTERS GET GREEN LIGHT IN BRITAIN
LONDON (AP) — Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, many cities in the U.S. — not to mention areas of Europe and Asia — had robust electric scooter renter programs. Now, Britain is trying to get rolling with those programs — because of the coronavirus. The London government has given approval to trials of scooter rental programs. The British Transport Department has rolled out new rules that would pave the way for e-scooter rentals. It's part of an effort to get Britons moving again while maintaining social distancing protocols — and taking some of the pressure off public transit systems as COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
ON THE WEB: CARL REINER
CYBERSPACE (AP) — The world lost an entertainment icon with the death of Carl Reiner. The actor, writer and director was 98. His Facebook page shows some of his most recent posts — some coming just days before his death was reported. On June 28, he sends a birthday message to fellow comedian and movie-maker Mel Brooks, who he describes as his “best friend of 70 years, dinner partner, my fellow Jeopardy watcher and the funniest man alive.”
