QUEEN LATIFAH ON “GONE WITH THE WIND”

NEW YORK (AP) — Queen Latifah says if she had her way, “Gone With the Wind” — would be gone for good. The actress-singer was asked about last week’s move by HBO Max to take the movie off the streaming service temporarily in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. And she says it wouldn’t bother her if the 1939 movie never aired again. Latifah says she doesn’t buy the argument that shelving the movie would tarnish the legacy of Hattie McDaniel, the first black woman to win an Oscar. Latifah says Hollywood already did that. She says McDaniel wasn’t let into the theater until her award was announced. And after she won, instead of McDaniel getting better roles, she kept being cast as a maid.

OSCARS TO BE POSTPONED

UNDATED (AP) — It’s only happened three times before. And next year, it will happen again. The motion picture academy says next year’s Oscars will be delayed. Instead of being in February, the awards will be April 25. The eight-week delay is because of effects of the coronavirus on the movie industry. The pandemic has shut down movie production and delayed the release of films already done. The delay also means an extension for the eligibility deadline for movies to be eligible for Oscar nods.

BEYONCÉ DEMANDS CHARGES IN BREONNA TAYLOR’S DEATH

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Beyoncé says the police in Louisville, Kentucky who killed Breonna Taylor “must be held accountable for their actions.” The singer-actress has joined the call for charges to be filed against the officers who barged into Taylor’s home and shot her eight times during a no-knock drug raid. Officers found no drugs. Beyoncé wrote the state’s attorney general asking that the officers face charges. The officers involved are assigned administrative duties while the shooting is being investigated.

“STREAMS” OF CHANGE

NEW YORK (AP) — Back in the day, people would say, “the revolution will not be televised.” And in this era of marches against police brutality, that’s true — in a sense. Instead of footage from TV cameras leading the way, it’s citizen video shot by smartphones that has sparked demonstrations in the U.S. and around the world. During a demonstration in New York, a marcher proclaimed, “This revolution won’t be televised! It’s going to be streamed!” The latest Black Lives Matter uprising was sparked by bystander video of the killings of Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, George Floyd and others.
