“LIVE PD” CANCELED

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Another TV show featuring cameras following police around has been canceled. A&E says it is dropping “Live PD” in the wake of weeks of protests inspired by the death of George Floyd. The move comes a day after the long-running police series “COPS” was spiked by the Paramount Network. The cancellation also comes a day after a news report said a “Live PD” crew last year recorded the arrest of a black man who died after police in Austin, Texas repeatedly used stun guns on him while detaining him. That man, Javier Ambler — like Floyd — cried out for help and pleaded with officers that he was sick and couldn’t breathe.

“GONE WITH THE WIND” PULLED TO ADD CONTEXT

NEW YORK (AP) — HBO Max says when it brings back “Gone With The Wind,” it will do so in a way that will put it into better perspective. The streaming service says it will add historical context to the 1939 film that, while popular, has long been criticized for glossing over the history of slavery and those seeking to preserve it in the Civil War era South. HBO Max says it won’t tamper with the movie itself — but will provide information that will show the premise on which it was based reflects on the racism that was prevalent in American society at the time.

LADY ANTEBELLUM CHANGES NAME TO LADY A

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) —Lady Antebellum is changing its name to Lady A. Members of the Grammy-winning country group say they are regretful and embarrassed for not taking into consideration the word’s associations with slavery. The band, made up of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, made the announcement today on social media. They say they chose the name after the antebellum style home where they shot their first band photos, and it reminded them of Southern styles of music. Band members say in recent weeks, their eyes have been opened to “blindspots we didn’t even know existed” and “the injustices, inequality and biases black women and men have always faced.” The group's first self-titled album came out in 2008, and included the Grammy-winning No. 1 country hit “I Run To You." They achieved crossover success on the pop charts with the nine-time platinum “Need You Now." They won three Grammys for that song, including Record of the Year.

J.K. ROWLING NOT BACKING DOWN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — J.K. Rowling has been catching flak over her recent comments about transgender people. And that criticism is likely to be increased after she doubled down on her comments with a statement yesterday. The “Harry Potter” author says she will never “bow down” to those who want her to remove the distinction between those who are born male or female — and those who change genders. That has drawn fire from the LGBTQ community and from Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, two stars of the Potter series based on Rowling’s books.

COACHELLA, STAGECOACH CANCELED

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two big music festivals that were first postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak are now canceled because of it. Health officials in California have decided to pull the plug on both the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals. They’re usually held in April — but organizers pushed them back to October as the pandemic spread to the U.S. But health officials are concerned about a possible surge in coronavirus cases in the fall — now both have been spiked. Travis Scott, Calvin Harris and Frank Ocean were to play Coachella while Stagecoach would have featured Lil Nas X, Carrie Underwood and Billy Ray Cyrus.
