ORONO, Maine (AP) — There will be faces in the stands when the University of Maine basketball teams finish out their season. There won't be any fans, though.

Fans paid $50 to have photo cutouts on display for UMaine’s men’s and women’s home basketball game games. It's part of a promotion called, “Pack the Pit." “The Pit” is the nickname for Memorial Gym.

The fan faces were making their debut this weekend as UMaine women’s basketball team hosted New Jersey Institute of Technology.

"We want to try to make the most of the situation,” said said Tyson McHatten, a spokesperson for UMaine athletics. “We wanted to create an atmosphere in The Pit. We’ve having fun with it.”

Fans and media members aren’t allowed to attend games at The Pit because state-imposed COVID-19 restrictions limit indoor gatherings to 50 people.
